The Greeks believed the first thing that existed was Chaos. From Chaos emerged Gaia, the embodiment of Earth, and Tartarus, who ruled the underground kingdom. Not too long after that emerged Eros, the representation of love. With Eros’ help Gaia was able to create herself a husband, who would be known as the god of the sky, Uranus. Night was the time when Uranus would cover Gaia with his body and they would create their children from these unions. The first born were the Titans, there were twelve in total, six of each sex. After the Titans, Gaia gave birth to more hideous creatures know as the Cyclopes (Brontes, Sterope, and Arges), these three massive giants only had one eye in the middle of their foreheads. And then came the fifty-headed, one hundred-handed monsters of which there were also three (Kottos, Briareos, and Gyes). Cronos was horrible to his children and could not stand the sight of their ugly faces, urged on my his mother, Cronos, the youngest of the Titans, overthrew his father and became ruler of the Earth and Sky in his stead. Uranus did not die but was weakened and banished while nursing his wounds and bruised ego.
