Athena

Athena is the virgin Goddess of wisdom, warfare and weaving as well as being the patron Goddess of Athens. Her symbols are an owl, an aegis and buckler from Zeus and a spear, she is depicted wearing her armor from the first time she emerges from the head of Zeus. She was the favourite child of Zeus and was the only one he trusted to hold onto his most treasured weapon, the thunderbolt. She was assaulted by Hephaestus when he became infatuated and tried to rape her, but she beat him off and kept her virginity intact. However, when she wiped off his seed and flung it to the Earth, Gaia, by accident, became pregnant and gave birth to Erichthonius, who Athena felt responsible for and adopted to raise as her own son. A woman named Arachne who claimed to be the best weaver of all time, challenged Athena, who in turn challenged her to a weaving contest. They weaved all day in challenge, so fast that you could not see their hands move. By the end of the day, Arachne’s hand wore red and raw, cut up from weaving so much, so fast, but Athena’s were still smooth and soft. When they put the tapestries side by side, Arachne proclaimed herself the winner, astonished that she was right and was better than the Goddess. Athena was so enraged, she nearly killed her but for her mother’s pleas, instead she turned her into a spider so she could continue to weave her webs forever.
