Demeter is one of two Earth gods, the other being Dionysus. When her only daughter Persephone was kidnapped and taken to the underworld, she went into a great depression and withdrew her gifts from the world, which became a frozen wasteland without her. Her grief was so great that she left Olympus to hide down with the lowly humans. She was sitting next to a well near Eleusis, in the guise of an elderly woman, when four sisters happened upon her and asked who she was and what she was doing out here by herself. After telling them that she had escaped pirates and now was in unfamiliar land with no family or friends, they insisted she come home with them so they could care for her. They bade her wait for them while they spoke to their mother, who insisted they come back with this stranger in need of help. Glad that she was still there when they returned, the four sisters returned home, unwittingly in the presence of the Goddess. Demeter fell in love with the baby boy of the house, Demophoon and helped to care for him, she fed him ambrosia and doused him in holy flames at night to try to give him immortal youth. His mother Metaneira, when seeing her son in flames, of course freaked out and ruined the whole thing. Demeter revealed herself as a goddess and commanded the people build her a temple to make up for displeasing her. When Persephone was finally returned to her she was overjoyed and resumed the crops harvesting, but every year when she watches her daughter go down to the underworld, the crops die and the lands freeze once more, thus the seasons were created by this unfortunate series of events.
