Hades was known as the God of the Underworld, which was called Hades, after him. However he did not choose this, he was either unlucky or tricked by his brothers, different sources have differing tales, but he drew the short straw and was left with the Underworld to rule over. He was lonely down under and decided that he would choose a wife to keep him company, in comes Persephone. He saw her in a meadow and fell in lust, or love, either way you want to look at it, he just had to have her. He waited until she was alone and then charged out on his chariot and swept her up to take back to the underworld. This has become a famous story known as The Rape of Persephone, Hades took her down to the underworld to become his wife. Persephone’s mother Demeter, Goddess of agriculture and grain, was absolutely distraught over the whole thing. She refused to let anything grow and the world got cold and entered it’s very first winter, Zeus tried to step in and make her grow the food for the humans but Demeter refused until she got her daughter back. Zeus then traveled down to the underworld and told Hades he had to give up his wife, Hades however was tricky and before she left he offered her a pomegranate for a snack, as soon as Persephone ate the fruit she was doomed to stay in the underworld. If you eat of drink anything in the underworld you cannot reenter the world of the living. Zeus however, knew of the dire circumstances on top and so bargained with the Lord of the Underworld. Six months of every year, Persephone will stay with him in the underworld and the other six she will be allowed to leave, to spend the time with her mother. And that is how Hades stole himself a wife.
