Hestia is the virgin Goddess of the hearth and home. She is a priestess who represents the household and the warmth of family that you get from being in the home. She does not really play a role in mythology, but every household had a shrine in the hearth dedicated to her and before and after every meal there was an offering to her. New born babies were also carried around the hearth in the home before they were accepted, there was also a public hearth in the middle of the city dedicated to her. When new colonies were sent out, the people carried with them coals from the mother city’s hearth to create their own in the new city. When Dionysus was born and then rose in power, Hestia stepped down from Olympus to be closer to the people because she felt they needed more support from her. This enabled Dionysus to become an Olympian God.
