King of the Seas, Poseidon was ruler of the sea and land, he was the creator of horses and the husband to the sea nymph, Amphitrite, with whom he had many sons including, Triton. Of course being an Olympian God he was not faithful to his wife and had many children with other women, including Proteus, who when captured and held fast would give forth his oracles. Poseidon also competed against Athena for the patronage of Athens, they decided to let the people decide after both producing a gift to the people. Poseidon created a spring in the city, which excited the Athenians but when they tried to drink from it, the realised it was salt water and not viable for drinking. Athena grew an olive tree in the middle of the city which the Athenians found many uses for such as making oils and using the wood for building material. Poseidon, realising that he was going to lose, withdrew from the competition and stated that his niece had bested him this day. Along with Apollo, Poseidon was responsible for building the walls of Troy, but when he was denied his payment afterwards, he turned on them and sent sea monsters to wreak havoc on the city. He sided against the Trojans in the Trojan war. Poseidon was often seen riding the waves in his chariot, lead by seahorses, holding aloft his trusty trident which he always carried with him.
