Zeus is considered the King of the Gods. He was the God of the sky as well as lightening and thunder which he controlled with his lightening and thunderbolts. Zeus was originally the youngest of his siblings but they were all eaten by their father Cronos when the were born while he was hidden away and raised on the island of Crete. Zeus became a powerful young man overthrew his father Cronos after getting him to regurgitate his siblings. Time was suspended for them in Cronos’ stomach and they all came out as babes, therefore Zeus became the oldest sibling as he had grown on the outside. When it came time after the Titanomachy to choose who ruled which realm, Zeus and his two brothers drew straws to see who ruled where. Zeus by some accounts cheated and that is how he ended up with the glorious sky and heavens as his domain. Zeus had too many lovers to count but among these were his first love, the Titan, Metis, who mothered Athena with him. Zeus was told that Metis’ child would overthrow him from the heavens and so he ate her and her unborn child, however when he had a splitting headache he asked Hephaistas to split his open with his axe. When Hephaistas did this, Athena jumped out of his head fully grown and already suited up in her armor. He also married his sister Demeter and had a daughter Persephone before marrying Hera, with whom he fathered Ares, the god of war; Hebe, a youthful beauty; and Eileithyia, the goddess of childbirth.
