Theseus

Theseus was the son of the King of Athens, King Aegeus and the Queen of Troizen, Aethra. He grew up with his mother but his father left him a magic sword under a rock and told Aethra that when his son was big enough to lift the rock and find the sword, he can come and live with him. When Theseus was big enough and lifted the rock easily he was amazed at the fine magic sword that his father had left him and headed to Athens. He reunited with his father after defeating a bunch of monsters on the way to Athens but after only six months his father was despaired because he had to send seven boys and seven girls as sacrifices to the minotaur in Crete. He told his father he would go as one of the sacrifices and try to defeat the minotaur, if he succeeded, on its way back, the ship shall have white sails. Theseus got to Crete and at the first sight of him, the princess Ariadne fell in love, when he entered the labyrinth she gave him a ball of wool and told him to use it wisely. He tied the end to the doorpost and unwound the ball as he went, went he confronted the minotaur, he slayed it with his magic sword and followed the ball of wool to the exit. On his trip home there were many celebrations until they arrived and found that the King was dead. In their celebrations they had forgotten to change the sails and so King Aegeus, thinking his son had died, jumped off a cliff into the waters in despair and killed himself. Theseus became king and ruled wisely for many years after his father’s death.
